Dear David,

This sure has been a cold Spring.   However, these cool temperatures means we get to enjoy all those spring flowers just a little bit longer.

If you are like me at this time of year, you are walking around the garden enjoying the return of old friends, cussing out the neighborhood rabbits, and perhaps mourning a loss here or there.  This is a great time to plant so you will want to come out and see all the new plant selections we have available for you to choose from -- almost two acres worth of huge, healthy specimens, potted and ready to take home.

Mother's Day weekend is here so stop by and pick up one of our gorgeous hanging baskets for your mom, or, perhaps, yourself!    They are 15% off when you buy two, but only this weekend.  We have some coupons for you below that you are going to want to take advantage of too.

Hope to see you soon,
David Waugh, co owner

Magnolia 'Dr Merrill'
Abies_concolor_Candicans

Everyone loves the Colorado blue spruce, but we all know that they suffer from needle cast in our climate as they get older.

We carry only dwarf varieties like 'Fat Albert' that hide the needle cast quite effectively.  If you want to avoid the needle cast disease altogether, we have two blue-foliaged conifers that are just as showy.  Abies concolor 'Candicans' is an adaptable fir with a wonderful texture.  It has the shape and adaptability of a Colorodo blue spruce and with bright blue foliage.  Another disease-resistant blue conifer is the Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii 'glauca'.  This large zone-4 hardy tree will become a spectacular specimen in full sun.

Spring-blooming  trees are slow to kick in this year.  It seems that only the Magnolias are brave enough to flower in this cool weather.  We have some great star varieties:  'Dr Merrill' and 'Leonard Messel' and the smaller variety 'Jane'.  If you're looking for a larger tree, why not Magnolia 'Butterflies'?  It has clear yellow flowers and shares the hardiness of the native Cucumber tree, M. acuminata.

Petunia 'Pretty Much Picasso'

Our hanging baskets are ready for Mother's Day.  We've got some great combinations featuring fun annuals like Calibrachoa (Million Bells), Begonia,Verbena, Geranium and Lobelia.  Of course, we have the new varieties Petunia 'Pretty Much Picasso' and Calibrachoa 'Blackberry Punch'.  Other fun annuals include flowering vines:  Moon Flower, Spanish Flag and Cathedral Bells.  When you plant a Clematis, think about combining it with an annual vine for the first and second year, since it takes that long for the Clematis to fill out.

2011 Leaf Casting

I have the perfect gift idea for your mom.  Get her a leaf casting gift certificate and take the class together!   I'm holding classes all summer long so there are plenty of dates to choose from. The tiniest details in the leaves are captured forever in concrete.   They make great bird baths, stepping stones or even fountains. I have more information on my website at http://www.morningwoodfarm.com/leaf

This weekend only, May 7-8, stop out and spend $20 at the nursery, and you can ask for a coupon for $10 off our leaf casting class.
