Heirloom Tomato plants for 2010
Note, in order for the flowers of tomato plants to be successfully pollinated, they need 3 days/nights above 50 degrees. In our climate, we recommend waiting until the second week of May before planting. Before that time, keep them in a sunny window indoors. In the descriptions below, determinate means the plant sets fruit once, usually one heavy yield that ripens at the same time. Indeterminate means it keeps on producing fruits up until frost.

Did your tomatoes develop late blight in 2009? Read the Dane County UW extension bulletin. The good news is that the cold temperature of winter would have killed the organism UNLESS you put your plants in your compost pile, which may have been warm enough to allow the organism to overwinter.

Particularly well suited for extreme northern areas of Montana, Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and New England. Black Krim

(69 days) Russian tomato named for the island of Krim in the Black Sea. Slightly flattened 4-5" globes with dark greenish-black shoulders, can turn almost black with enough heat and sun. Excellent full flavor. Indeterminate.

Yellow Pear

Green Zebra (78 days) Starts out green with dark green stripes, softening and blushing yellow when it ripens. It might have remained a mere curiosity, but for its scrumptious sweet rich flavor. (80 days) This French heirloom is one of the most beautiful and delicious tomatoes. Beneath its deep blushed orange skin the flesh is a mottled red, giving it an exotic and incredibly appetizing appearance. Aunt Rubys German Green
(80 days) A large green beefsteak tomato with delicious sweet, spicy flavor. Globe-shaped 12 to 16 ounce fruits are smooth skinned, light green when ripe with a tint of yellow, the green flesh meaty and full-flavored. Indeterminate.
cherokee Purple
(80 days)Beautiful dark red fruits that shade to black with greenish shoulders. High in acid, these fruits are extremely flavorful. Productive plants produce large crops of 12 oz. fruits. Indeterminate.
Opalka (85 days) Great for sauces and canning. More flavorful than most paste tomatoes. A long, pepper-shaped type with fruits that grow to 4 to 6" long, clustered in groups of two to five fruits. Sweet flavor is great eaten straight off the vine. Indeterminate.
